A funny thing happened to me when I turned on my computer the other morning.
It started.
Really.
No kidding.
No blue screen of death, no Microsoft "Welcome to Windows 98...Please reboot your system 14 times or so", no hanging.
It just...started.
I was so bloody shocked I dropped a whole cup of coffee on my cat.
It was an accident of course, although I think it's going to take a whole lot of kitty treats to convince my cat of that.
I think he's still hiding under the sofa lounge somewhere...
And that was two days ago.
Now mind you, I am not used to Windows reacting in this manner, so I sat there, dumbfounded, and just stared at the screen for several minutes, not knowing what I should do next. I really didn't want to touch anything. I was sure something was going to explode. I even went as far as calling my wife into the study to examine it for me...a professional second opinion of sorts.
She asked several pertinent questions:
"Are you sure it's OUR machine?"
"Maybe it thinks it's a Linux system."
"We should call a tech. Maybe it's broken."
"Where's the cat, honey?"
Ok, so that's where I ended this meeting of minds with my wife. "Honey? Is that the phone ringing?"
For some odd reason, this ploy seems to work time after time. By the time she reaches the phone she usually remembers some other "important" or life threatening task she needs to accomplish, or needs me to accomplish, before "The Bold and the Beautiful" comes on and the world as we know it, comes to a screeching halt.
Meanwhile, I sit in stark amazement, insufferably pleased with myself, alone with a machine I usually refer to in much more colorful terms.
My day is complete you see. I needn't even attend to the many tasks that usually take up my morning. A single event has opened up a whole new era in computing for me.
It started.
