Metapad v1.42 [22k] W9x/NT FREE

http://members.tripod.com/~aadavids/metapad.zip
http://welcome.to/metapad/

What!? Another NOTEPAD replacement? Okay, so what makes this one different? Well, it's smaller than the Windows notepad, runs (seemingly) quicker, comes with search & replace functionality, remembers window size and position, has more keyboard shortcuts... and if those options don't win you over, Metapad was also created by a Lockergnomie! It still has a memory limit (like the Windows Notepad), but you'd only want to use this editor for simple tasks anyway. Notepad has been permanently replaced on my machine.

Xteq X-Setup v5.5.1 [3.0M] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.xteq.com/downloads/xq-xsetup.zip
http://www.xteq.com/products/xset/

"From simple boot options up to server settings, X-Setup allows you to change more than 400 hidden functions with some simple button clicks. Some topics X-Setup covers: Windows, Internet Explorer, Instant Messaging, Office, Explorer appearance, Server options, Network settings and Security. Xteq X-Setup is the most complete system utility ever available for Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT 4.0 and Windows 2000. And it is everywhere you need it: either in Start - Programs or as a symbol in Settings - Control Panel."

Terragen v0.7.28 [2.5M] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Pierre d'Herin

http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/tginstall_0_7_28.zip
http://www.planetside.co.uk/terragen/

WOAH! This, my friends, is what they call a killer app. I'm not a graphics genius (by far), but within a few moments, Mr. Bigglesworth was rendering beautifully drawn REALISTIC LOOKING nature scenes. I was able to configure the terrain (mountains, grass), sun position (color, size), atmosphere (clouds), water, and the camera's point of view. After some serious tweaking, you could have a fantastic image that'll impress your closest friends. Rendering the final image may take a while to complete (even on faster computers)--but the output is usually well worth the wait!

Cacheman v3.80 [496k] W9x FREE

http://www.outertech.com/appz/cacheman.zip
http://www.outertech.com/

I believe it's been a while since I last mentioned this utility (although it is listed on Lockergnome's cool stuff page). If you wonder why your computer is running slowly (or not as fast as it should be), understand that Windows 98 didn't "come" pre-optimized. You have to do a lot of tweaking on your own. The latest version of Cacheman takes out the guesswork. You can tweak the disk cache, name cache, and file cache settings--essentially making your system behave the way you want it to. I discovered a noticeable speed increase after using it. There are also presets for 'novices' and everything is undoable--never fear. You want this.

Registry Engineer v1.00.0003 [35k] W9x FREE

http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Network/4414/RegEng.zip
http://www.geocities.com/SiliconValley/Network/4414/

The system registry contains a myriad of keys and strings. You may find yourself visiting the same items over and over. While you could memorize the exact locations of certain elements, it would be easier to "bookmark" them for simplified future access. That's where the Registry Engineer can help. In a matter of seconds, you'll have one-click access to any given key in your registry. If you're a power user, this Engineer will definitely help keep your system on track. No more redundant searches, no more memorizing, no more muss or fuss. All aboard!

MacVision v0.8.204 [586k] W9x/NT FREE

http://members.aol.com/JMB1984/MacVision/MacVision_v.8.204.zip
http://members.aol.com/JMB1984/MacVision/

Have you recently made the leap from Mac to PC? Still miss the UI? Well, here's a utility that'll make you feel a bit more at home; it'll basically make your Windows 9x Desktop look like a Macintosh. This version will 'time out' in a few weeks, but that's to insure that you'll download the latest beta version available (some of MacVision's functions don't work properly yet). Heck, even if you don't use a Mac, you can use this util to trick your friends into believing that you performed an "impossible" upgrade. Welcome to MacOS... in Windows?

1st Page 2000 v2.0 [5.2M] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Tom Simpson

ftp://ftp.evrsoft.com/pub/evrsoft.com/1stpage2000.exe
http://www.evrsoft.com/1stpage/

Notepad is the HTML editor of choice for hardened coders from yesteryear. Why spend money on a program which helps you do what you already know how to do? Sure, it may come with fancy tools and buttons, but HTML (once you've mastered the basics) is not that difficult to craft. I'm a big HomeSite and HotDog fan, but 1st Page 2000 is giving both of them a run for their money. I am totally blown away with how extensive this freeware editor is. Give it a shot -- post haste.

ShellGEM v1.36 [339k] W9x FREE

http://home.c2i.net/hace/files/shellgem.zip
http://home.c2i.net/hace/shellgem.html

Is the right-click menu perfect? I thought so, until I ran into this add-on. When you drag & drop a file using your right mouse button, typically only 3 to 5 options pop up (Move, Copy, Create Shortcut, Cancel, etc.). With ShellGEM installed, you'll have a whole new range of options. Now when you perform the same task, you'll be able to send the objects to any given folder on your system! The cascading menus pop out quickly, and you can configure it to work with archived files as well. It'll even keep a history and favorites list for you automatically. A true gem!

QNX IAT Demo v4.0 [1.4M] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Pete Jones

http://www.qnx.com/demodisk/modem/qnxdemo.zip
http://www.qnx.com/iat/index.html

I'm leery about playing with different OSes on the same computer, but when I heard about this ultra-small download, I had to try it. To put it bluntly, I was simply amazed. You have to try this, gang! It's an Internet operating system that fits on a 3.5" floppy disk. No joke! After installation, just boot to the IAT floppy. Be sure you know one of your DNS servers (run WINIPCFG if you don't know) and your dial-up information. The minimum requirements: a 386, 3.5" floppy drive, VGA monitor, 8 MB RAM, a modem, an ISP, and a mouse. No Hard disk required! You can surf the web from a floppy! Network version also available.

DesktopFrames v1.2b1 [162k] W9x FREE

http://somedec.com/downloads/DesktopFrames1.2b1.zip
http://somedec.com/downloads/

This is one of those utilities that you need to have--if only for it's uniqueness. It's like Microsoft's 'Active Desktop,' without the bulky overhead. You can add countless images to your Desktop quickly and easily, and associate each one with an action (like a program launch) when clicked upon. Create collages without blinking (although the images will remain on top of your Desktop icons). Originally designed for LiteStep users, DesktopFrames can be used by anyone.

TextExtract v2.0.1 [670k] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~fangorn/ultimathule/textextract.zip
http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~fangorn/ultimathule/

Corrupted documents are a major problem... especially when you need to view (or edit) information tucked away inside of them. Instead of trying to clean those error-ridden files by hand, use TextExtract. It will scan any file (corrupted or not) and extract the text strings it encounters into a separate file. You won't even have time to break a sweat. You should also swing by the Web site to pick up the Writer's Database (for freelance writers) and Music Database (for those who have an extensive music album collection).

CopyURL v2.21 [206k] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.moonsoftware.com/cgi-bin/download.exe?copyurl
http://www.moonsoftware.ee/

Stop reading now. Don't ask questions. Get this enhancement. You'll love what it'll do for yr Internet Shortcuts, for SURE. Get *three* new and functional options: Copy URL [copies just the URL to the clipboard], Copy Link [copies the URL/title to the clipboard in HTML format], and Copy Name [copies the URL/title to the clipboard]. Major time saver here, folks--no joke. I'll shut up now so you can get it, okay?

DX-Ball 2 v1.2 [2.1M] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.longbowdigitalarts.com/dxb2game12.exe
http://www.LongbowDigitalArts.com/dxball2.html

All I have to say about this game is: GET IT! If you liked DX-Ball (1.0), then you'll fall head over heels for this new version. There is no equivalent; this is the BEST "Breakout" type of game out there. The core component is free (as well as 24 different levels), but extra boards will cost a few bucks (and are well worth the price). I believe they'll add new boards to their site over time, as well. I've yet to meet a person who doesn't become addicted to DX-Ball after playing it just once.

WatchCat v2.0 [143k] W9x/NT FREE

http://vbourdo.virtualave.net/cgi-bin/download.cgi?s=wcat-zip
http://vbourdo.virtualave.net/?wcat

Do you like watching cats? Well, here's a "watching cat"... and this one won't shed or make you sneeze. Looking for a good home--free to any loving, responsible user. It's a relatively quiet pet, and well behaved, too. WatchCat "hides" any given window from the Taskbar and places it in its System Tray icon menu. Simply right-click on the minimize button in a window and it'll disappear from direct sight. You can also set it up to automatically close or hide certain windows after they've been inactive for a period of time. Here kitty, kitty!

The Layout-o-Matik v1.0.1 [2.9M] W9x/NT US$10
Unearthed by theNOIZ

http://www.web-o-tron.com/filelib/Web-o-Tron1w.zip
http://www.web-o-tron.com/layoutomatik.html

Run, don't walk, and download this program! It's the MOST incredible thing I've ever seen for simple web page generation. If you don't have the time (or don't know how) to design a decent layout for a web page, get The Layout-o-Matik. I don't care if you're a novice or a pro, you'll want this program on your hard drive--and you'll want to show it to every one of your friends, too. I'm not sure, but I believe it requires the Macromedia Shockwave & Director files installed... and is well worth it. Point, click, generate... then edit the HTML file in your preferred HTML editor.

Tyler v3.0 [320k] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Christoph Flögel

http://www.smalleranimals.com/zips/tyler.zip
http://www.smalleranimals.com/tyler.htm

A few weeks ago, I covered ArcSoft's PhotoMontage in an HTML Daily issue--it's a software package which takes an "unlimited" amount of photo snapshots and puts them together to form a larger picture. Kinda neat, actually. If you've already got hundreds of digital photos sitting around, consider picking up Tyler as an alternative to ArcSoft's CD ROM. The more digital (or scanned) pictures you have, the more varied your "montages" will become. Your co-workers will be taken aback with amazement. Don't tell them you're not as smart as you look, though.

TClockEx v 1.3.3 [136k] W9x/NT FREE

http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/files/tclockex.zip
http://users.iafrica.com/d/da/dalen/tclockex.htm

I admit it... I wanted to look at this program a few weeks ago, but didn't get around to it. I assumed it was another "silly" clock program--but I couldn't have been MORE wrong! This is exactly what Microsoft should have done with their System Tray clock! You can configure what data shows up in the Tray (and ToolTip) as well as how it appears: day, month, year, minute, second, week, time zone... even display basic system resources. Everything imaginable is configurable to your liking. I can't think of any reason you wouldn't want to use this. Two o'clock thumbs up!

Message Manager Lite v1.04 [156k] W9x FREE

http://www.rjlsoftware.com/download/message.zip
http://www.rjlsoftware.com/

Ever run into a dialog box that made you laugh? What about one that almost made you pee your pants? Well, you haven't lived until you've created your own dialog box to elicit such responses. And now you can with this amazing little gizmo (although the program actually has no representative icon). You can use this for graphics on your web pages... giving visitors the idea that they're actually running into a real choice (and you could IMAGEMAP the buttons). Or, set it up to run on your friend's computer on Startup. It's quite configurable, and so much fun!

MouseImp v1.0.2.13 [372k] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.tv4studios.com/downloads/mouseimp.exe
http://www.tv4studios.com/eng/services/index_mouseimp.html

I'm still getting used to Manny's mouse controls. Sure, I could use a PS/2 mouse when I've got room, but I need to master this laptop's "default" method. Using a scroll bar is the biggest trick (I often over- and undershoot it). Then I tried MouseImp. It's perfect for those of us who are having difficulties manipulating the mouse cursor; you can "scroll" ANYWHERE in a window by clicking, holding, and dragging. MouseImp will also "shrink Windows" temporarily out of your way. This puppy should work with any mouse on any system. No cats allowed.

The Partition Resizer v1.3.1 [97k] DOS FREE
Unearthed by a Lockergnomie

http://members.xoom.com/_XOOM/Zeleps/Files/PRESZ131.ZIP
http://members.xoom.com/Zeleps/

"[This is] the first free program to resize and move partitions without data loss, is now more complete, with support for disks up to 2TB of size. Partition resizer is a small DOS executable, which requires no installation, and can perform all these tasks in a short while, giving you the opportunity to re-arrange your disk partitions safely, quickly, and fuss-free."

WinTorres v2.1.2 [479k] W9x FREE

http://wintorres.sashimi-net.com/win/wint212.exe
http://wintorres.sashimi-net.com/

Help! There's a cute Klingon half-breed staring at me; I believe her eyes are following me around the room. It's WinTorres--the cutest thing to hit your Desktop since them crazy dancin' hamsters. So what does she do? Well, she basically sits there and looks pretty. If you don't like her, you can also download other Star Trek (and/or Star Wars) characters. It's a lotta 'fun' with a little functionality (birthday reminders, fortune cookies, etc.). For the person who has everything.

Screen Measure v1.2R3 [493k] W9x/NT FREE

http://huizen.dds.nl/~oguz/download/files/SMSetup12.exe
http://huizen.dds.nl/~oguz/software/main.html

Inches, centimeters... who needs 'em? I talk in the universal language of pixels. Like, it's 490 billion pixels between here and the nearest burger joint. Well, at least on your screen, the pixel matters most. All graphic dimensions on the Web are described in pixels, so Screen Measure should be welcomed by anybody who designs Web pages. It uses pixels only (oriented vertically or horizontally), and its automatic zoom function will allow you to see the every grainy detail. It rules!

CD-ROM god v5.5 Beta 2 [1.0M] W9x FREE
Unearthed by John Staker

http://www.gankish.net/rumblesoft/files/cdgod55.exe
http://www.gankish.net/rumblesoft/

When was the last time you made a boot disk? Don't remember? Well, perhaps you should double check to make sure you've got one lying around--you never know when you're gonna need it. Windows 9x makes it relatively simple to make a boot disk, but sometimes it doesn't recognize your CD-ROM drive. That can be a problem, especially if you need CD-ROM access from the command prompt outside of Windows. Time to "pray" to the CD-ROM god. It runs from the command prompt, and as long as you can guestimate what kind of CD-ROM you have, it'll create a boot disk for you (replete with CD-ROM drivers). It knows of 50+ different types, so there's a strong chance it can work for you.

ASCII Pic v1.0 [152k] W9x/NT FREE

http://5679soft.virtualave.net/cgi-bin/asciipic.pl
http://w3.to/5679soft/

Whoa, this puppy is totally cool! Basically, you can take any given BMP on your computer and it will turn it into ASCII Art. No muss, no fuss--all fun! ASCII Art is basically "art" that is created by putting together on-screen characters. You should use a Fixed Pitch font (like Courier New) to view any type of ASCII art. If you've never seen ASCII Art, you haven't lived. Download this utility, find an interesting pictorial BMP, and convert it to ASCII Art format. You should be able to pull it up perfectly in WordPad.

ClipCache Plus v2.6 [865k] W9x/NT US$20

http://www.sns-access.com/~netpro/download/ccsetup.exe
http://www.xrayz.demon.co.uk/

Do me a favor and copy this sentence to your clipboard. Okay, now copy this sentence. If you weren't using a clipboard extender utility, chances are, you lost that first sentence. Had it been an important piece of information, that loss could very well have been permanent. The new version of ClipCache Plus is out, and it's got a feature that I'm sure you'll love; beyond enhancing clipboard capabilities, it'll also strip the ">" symbols out of any one of your e-mail messages!

Solitude v1.42 [3.2M] W9x/NT FREE

http://nng.simplenet.com/apps/solt_150.zip

You've probably seen countless solitaire games on the Internet. Some of them enable you to play only one particular solitaire game, while others include more than a few. Well, this puppy has around *90* different solitaire card games contained within the same program! I thought it was a joke (and so I laughed), but this author should be taken very seriously. The UI won't win any awards, but with all of these different games, you really can't lose. Plus, you can view your statistics at any time. I can't believe it's FREE!

InfoRapid Search & Replace v3.0c [752k] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Terry McMillan

http://www.inforapid.com/sr/sr.exe
http://www.inforapid.com/html/english.htm

Seek, and ye shall find. Find, and ye shall be pleasantly surprised. The Windows Find applet performs basic search functions, but it could be built a bit better. InfoRapid steps up to the plate and allows you to search AND replace terms not only in ASCII documents (TXT, HTML, etc.), but binary files as well (XLS, DOC, etc.). Sure, you could always do these operations by hand, but these results will appear in a straightforward list, with hypertextual links and highlighted entries. Plus, the interface is familiar.

Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=17304

"The Windows 2000 Readiness Analyzer tool analyzes your system and reports potentially incompatible hardware devices and software applications. The tool matches the devices and applications on your system against a list of known problems. This check also occurs during Windows 2000 Setup, but you can download and run the tool before you install Windows 2000 to help ensure your installation will be successful. The Readiness Analyzer will display a list of your hardware and software that it detects may present Windows 2000 compatibility issues. You can save or print this report for your reference."

PaperQuote v2.01 [1.3M] W9x/NT FREE

http://download.paperquote.com/pq20.exe
http://www.paperquote.com/

For those of you wondering how I construct these reviews: I test the product/service, look at the title, then wait for inspiration to strike (either that, or for the pizza boy to arrive). The muse isn't always on duty, unfortunately. Luckily, Inspiration is just a click away with PaperQuote. Every day, you'll get a new wallpaper (800x600) with an inspirational quote on it! The 'Sampler' and 'Miracle Planet' are free; if you'd like other channels, they come with a small annual price. Beats the heck out of scanning!

SoftSubmit v1.05 [352k] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.analogx.com/files/ssubmiti.exe
http://www.analogx.com/contents/download/program/ssubmit.htm

Without a doubt, this newsletter would be nowhere near as complete as it is without your submissions. I need every gnomie to unearth worthwhile software, services, and stuff for publication. So where does SoftSubmit come into the picture? Well, it's specifically for software developers wanting to inform major 'shareware' sites of a program's release (or update). Out of all of them I've seen, I like this one the most. Of course, it's hard not to like AnalogX's freeware. He's always working on something worth using.

Windows CleanUp! v2.0.0 [751k] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Keith Burch

http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/zeus/cleanup/CleanUp20.exe
http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/zeus/cleanup/README.html

"The new CleanUp! version 2.0 performs the following clean up of your system: Empties the Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator caches. Empties the Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator History file/folder (which lists places you've visited recently). Empties the Internet Mail and News, Outlook Express and Netscape Navigator newsgroup caches. Empties the Recent Documents folder (the one which appears under the Windows 95/NT Start menu). Removes all files from the temporary directories. These are often left behind by programs that don't properly clean up after themselves, etc."

Digital Postman v2.0 [1.2M] W9x/NT FREE

http://www124.pair.com/ncuppen/dp.exe
http://www.nico2000.com/

No doubt you've heard of Nico's Commander: a classic, clean 32-bit file manager. He's gone postal. Those of us with scanners often use them to copy printed documents and e-mail the graphic to friends and colleagues. It's a simple enough process to master, but the Digital Postman removes a few steps for you. Point, click, scan... it's sent in the form of an executable (so the recipient doesn't need a separate program to see it). Works swimmingly when you're interacting with those not terribly experienced with PCs.

ShellON v1.8.0b [462k] W9x FREE
Unearthed by Jason Morley

http://shellon.cjb.net/files/shellon/ShellONInstall.zip
http://shellon.cjb.net/

The debate rages on: does Explorer bog down your system? So, get rid of it! You should still be able to run all your favorite programs (and then some). I've always been supportive of third-party shells; Explorer replacements can be found all over the Internet. The most popular, without a doubt, is LiteStep (and rightfully so). For maniacs who can't get enough customization in their cyberlives, there's ShellON -- an easy to use Windows shell manager. Switching between shells couldn't be easier; it's uncrackable.

Auction Central v1.02 [1.1M] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.gplanet.com/auctioncentrali.exe
http://www.gplanet.com/auctioncentral.shtml

I've haven't done it yet; participating in online auctions can be addictive. Heck, I know some people who've made it their full-time job! You can get some killer deals, but you can also get ripped off (by paying too much or dealing with an underhanded buyer/seller). With this little app, you'll get a listing of over 400 online auction sites, along with daily offers and the latest auction-related news. It handles bid tracking and multi-auction searches through over 200 sites. Better get it before someone outbids you.

ZoneAlarm v1.8 [1.2M] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by Russell Coover

http://www2.zonelabs.com/downloads/zonalm18.exe
http://www.zonelabs.com/

ZoneAlarm's features make being connected safer: Visual Internet Activity displays current Internet activity and the application responsible for the activity. Internet Access Lock enables automatic variable strength locking of Internet access based upon a period of inactivity or a screen saver. Application Access Control provides assignment of Internet access rights to application providing protection against Spyware. Self Configuring software only design makes it easy to install and use, that, unlike a Firewall, does not require technical knowledge. Deskband Toolbar keeps ZoneAlarm within reach..."

MPEGJOIN v1.1 [89k] DOS FREE
Unearthed by Ted Thompson

http://ftp.sunet.se/mpeg1/util/mpegjo11.zip
http://ftp.sunet.se/mpeg1/util/

Daily gnomies have been watching my one-minute videos (to see one, simply look at the most recent daily issue sidebar). To some, that's 60 seconds too long; for others, it's not long enough. What can I say? The Mavica FD-91 allows me to record a maximum of one minute at the smallest resolution. If I wanted to go longer, I'd have to use a different camera. Or, since they're recorded in MPG format automatically, I can splice an unlimited amount of sequences together with this little gem. It's old, but it works well.

BiblioExpress v2.0 [530k] W9x/NT FREE

http://www.biblioscape.com/bibexp2.exe
http://www.biblioscape.com/biblioexpress.htm

It's difficult to admit when you're wrong. Nevertheless, I really need to get something off my chest: I faked some bibliographies when writing papers in school. What's the difference who said it; if it's a poignant quote, then it's worth repeating. Well, this app is for those of you who prefer to be honest with your research. It can be used to collect literature references of different types, exploring bibliographic resources on the Internet, as well as format records in the popular styles (ACS, APA, MLA). Write on!

Automated QuickRes v1.09 [905k] W9x FREE
Unearthed by Steve Dickerson

http://www.berend.com/download/qres1090.exe
http://www.berend.com/qres.html

Program X works best in 800x600x256c and Program Y runs optimally in 1024x768x16b. What is a user to do? Switching between resolutions and color depths all the time can drive you mad. QuickRes was created after Windows 95 was released to help speed up the process, but the task remains tedious in all versions. This proggie allows for the automated switching of screen settings; you configure it for your favorite games and applications. When one is launched, your color depth and/or resolution will automatically flip.

OpenExpert v1.00 [542k] W9x/NT FREE

http://216.71.160.13/cgi-bin/track.cgi?p=files/openexp.exe
http://www.baxbex.com/openexpert.html

That SendTo menu of yours appears to be cluttered. Sure, it's a great tool, but you have so many file types with different 'needs' that it's close to impossible to tweak each one (without having to use the conventional Windows file type editor). You don't have to do anything but install this to become an instant expert; you'll get a new cascading menu item (in the context menu, when you right-click on a file) which you'll be able to fill with applications specific to a certain file type. It's an open and shut case.

Camera Path Editor v3.0 [125k] W9x/NT FREE
Unearthed by David Bridson

http://www.geocities.com/~ffrog/misc/cpe300.zip
http://www.geocities.com/~ffrog/campath.html

What's so terrible about Terragen? Absolutely nothing. I've featured it a few times in the past; if you missed it, go get it (there's a link on this site). You can create high-quality nature scenes (terrain) with the click of a button. And now, with this powerful add-on, you can easily animate your generated territories. Define the path, tweak some environmental settings, and you're ready to rock and roll. You're creating an entirely new world here; may as well start filming it. Ya know, it's non-taxable property.

Sign Language Teacher v1.06a [582k] W9x/NT FREE

http://home.att.net/~aslslant/downloads/slsetup106a2.zip
http://home.att.net/~aslslant/

Sign language doesn't work real well on the Internet -- yet; streaming video frame rates are too low (and of poor quality). We still do plenty of communicating with the audially challenged offline. So, if you haven't already mastered the American Sign Language, there's no better time like the present to learn. By mimicking the on-screen graphics, you'll practice the alphabet with your hands; after a few drills, you'll be able to sign complete words. I suppose there's only one question left to ask: what's your sign?

Most 3D shoot-em-up games aren't suitable for younger audiences, but the gentler alternatives don't always appeal to our senses. So, what happens when you combine smooth graphics with excellent sound and addictive, family-friendly gameplay? You lose your afternoon (and evening). I bet you can't wait to knock a couple of robots together; get three in a row and they'll fall from the board. Oh, I'm sorry... they're called bleeps. If someone would have bleeping told me sooner, I'd have lost even more bleeping time.

Did someone hide the virtual thimble again? Guess it's time to find it. With so many search engines and directories out there, it's close to impossible to perform a comprehensive search. That being said, there are several standalone 'search' aids waiting to assist you. Kick it into turbo mode... try this one online before downloading it to your own system. Enter a word (or phrase), choose a specific category (if so desired), then select the sites through which you wish to search. With any luck, you'll get results.

Slow down there, tiger. Do you realize how fast you're going? Probably not, and that's why Timo A. Toivonen created ShowMHz -- a Win32 console app to check the CPU's model, internal clock speed, MMX/SIMD presence, and P3 serial number (if your processor is a P3). Also worth noting on his site: a 3D Graphics Glossary, which explains many current 3D and DirectX related terms. Show me the megahertz!

Speak & Spell Simulator v1.3b [1.4M] W9x/NT FREE

Bongy-boingy. Engu-engu. Voogy-vooah. No, I'm not doing my Don Martin impression again; didn't you (or a friend, sibling, relative) have the Texas Instruments Speak & Spell unit? My brother had a terrible time with spelling (just as I didn't carry the mathematics gene). This was years before the 'hukt on fonix' packages had invaded our lives. My parents figured that Adam would learn by playing games. I think we used it mostly to spell out all the dirty words we knew. And, before you ask: batteries not included.

Inchworm, inchworm... we all know that two and two is four. But when it comes to computing far more complex number sequences, we need a little outside help. Always show your work. Shyeah right! This cool (skinnable) calculator remains hidden until you hit your NumLock key. Do your work, tap the key again, and away it goes... waiting for your next operation. In addition, this is perfect for those of us who want to multiply our efficiency without dividing our attention span or subtracting from our allocated resources.

MyRun v1.0 [507k] W9x FREE

"MyRun will allow you to run several programs with one click. Of course, you can continue to click three separate icons, but one click is decidedly more enjoyable. Should you have several programs which load on Windows startup, your hard disk starts to sound like a helicopter. Pauses between launchings can minimize HD head moving (and, believe it or not, possibly speed up the process). "Why not use BAT files?" Well, they can't make pauses between launches, set process priority or window position, allow for a hidden launch, or free some physical memory before launch a program to minimize swap activity."

The holiday season has passed, but that doesn't mean the toys have stopped popping up. I asked for a typewriter when I was younger; it wasn't electric, and you really had to pound it to see any character. Nowadays, there are all types of keyboards (if you'll pardon the expression). Mushy keys don't make me happy; I love hearing the clacking underneath my fingers. If you need more noise in your life, this gizmo will enable a WAV sound to be played whenever any given key (or mouse button) is pressed. Clack clack!

"We had no cash, so we couldn't have gotten far... what the heck time is it now?" The Des Moines area is lucky enough to be situated in a single time zone; I'd hate to be on a border. Swatch came up with the idea of Internet time, and now they're trying to make something akin to that official. The Internet is there at all hours of the day (and night). Gotta love that. We all live in the same world, but our watches use different faces. Keep track of all time formats with WorldTime; it's the way every clock should be.

I downloaded a doohickey the other day; it was designed to replace my thingamabob. What's-her-face told me to get the doodad, but I don't really know why. I'd much rather lock myself in my office and play with the font thing. You can easily browse installed (and non-installed) fonts, view sample text and separate characters (as well as manipulate their formatting), access detailed font information, print font samples, Install or uninstall any number of fonts at once, and load any number of fonts for temporary use.

{POP3 e-mail notifier} Yes, it's another proggie that'll check to see if there's new e-mail sitting on your mail server. Granted, it probably isn't the most efficient one out there (and this version may have a few kinks), but the fact that it makes your Num Lock key blink when there's new messages waiting to be downloaded -- that's TOO COOL! Why bother watching the System Tray? Won't a flashing light get your attention quicker? And, uh... I hope you like Pokemon.

{Simple skateboarding simulation} Adam went through his skater phase; people called him 'Frojive' (most likely, because of his taste in music and outrageous hairstyle at the time). His baggy pants and wallet chain will forever be remembered in our family. This pastime is a way of life for some people; if the danger of bodily harm keeps you from pursuing this hobby, perform tricks in the comfort of your own home. You don't even have to worry about pads.
